Make it Engaging: Facilitation Techniques

After you have a plan for the meeting, try some of these facilitation techniques:

  • Keep it short. Do as much as you can in advance or outside of the full group meeting so that the time spent together can be shorter and more focused.
  • Make it matter! Ensure human connection is put first. Remember: people don’t care what you know until they know that you care.
  • Remind everyone of the purpose of the meeting, and keep circling back to that purpose throughout the conversation.
  • Encourage different perspectives.
  • Call on people (kindly). If someone isn’t available on audio, ask them to contribute via the chat function.
  • Provide summaries of the conversation before moving on to the next topic.
  • Capture highlights and themes, and follow up with these after the meeting.
